Shea trees are the backbone of many rural economies in Northern Ghana. Yet for years, environmental pressures and poor harvesting practices threatened their survival.
But communities are now taking action.
Through environmental awareness and climate-smart initiatives supported by Development Frontiers Women Cooperatives, local farmers are protecting the natural resources that sustain their livelihoods.
Meet Abubakari Gado: A Community Champion for the Environment
Abubakari Gado, from Lamsa, once watched as shea trees in the community slowly disappeared.
“People were cutting trees without thinking about the future,” he recalls.
A Turning Point: Climate-Smart Awareness
Through DFWC programs, communities learned:
- The importance of protecting shea trees
- Tree planting practices
- Sustainable harvesting methods
- Environmental conservation strategies
A Community Protecting Its Future
Today the community is actively working to protect its natural resources.
- Shea trees are being preserved
- New trees are being planted
- Farmers are practicing climate-smart farming
Abubakari says the benefits are clear:
“We now know that protecting our environment means protecting our children’s future.”
